Cardiac Cardinals
The Raytown South Cardinals added a new wrinkle to the teams resume, the ability to give every fan watching a heart attack. This past Saturday they faced the Nixa Eagles on their home field in the quarterfinals of the state championship tournament. The Nixa Eagles kept the high powered Cardinal offense in check for most of the game and gave me concern that this years season may come to end. But Jerrick Walton had other plans, he was the one part of the Cardinals offense the Eagles had no answer for. He ripped off chunks yardage every time he touched ball, powering the Cardinals to 3 touchdowns and the single most exciting play I have seen in high school football.
With 7 seconds left in a tied 15 - 15 game, Raytown South had the ball on the Eagles 39 yard line, Quarterback, Dennis Tanner was flushed out of the pocket scrambling all over looking for an open receiver. In an attempt to get the ball off he was hit by a Nixa defender, causing the ball to be popped straight up in the air were it was almost intercepted by a Nixa defender and came down to Jerrick Walton, who side step a tackle stepped out of another, gained several block with a crushing one headed for the left sideline and beat the Nixa defense to the end zone for the game-winning touchdown in a 21-15 victory.

The Battle of Raytown
It is the biggest high school rivalry I have seen in recent years but the outcome of this years game would have not made you believe it. Raytown South dished out a 52 to 7 beat down of Raytown Blue jays, winning the district championship in convincing fashion. The playoffs start Wednesday night and I'm looking forward to seeing if I need to make plans for the trip to St. Louis.
